Shade leanded in to hear that, then went to staring strait ahead then.
"Well... no way I'm going to beat the odds." Shade said. "Should I be writting a will?" She asked a bit sarcasticly.

"Don't talk like that," Hatori said. He looked her in the eyes now. "You'll live. You're going to live." His voice was a whisper as he spoke. And he sounded far older than he looked, when in truth his physical age was twenty-eight, while his real age was about thirty, thirty-one.

"You said the survival rate is five percent." Shade snapped, but in her wharped mind she was doing this to protect him from any more hurt.
"So that's like, ninety-five people out of ever hundred DIE from it." She said to him. Her voice softened. "If I'm gonna die and I want to do it quietly." She murmured.

Shade stood up, looking down at Hatori now, although not by much.
"I'm going to go tell Tadao." She told Hatori. "I guess I'll come back later and tell Mom, unless you're going to." She said to him, turning her back on him and walking out.
She walked back to the house she and Tadao shared. Shade kept her face blank when she entered the house.
"Tadao?" She called out with her hoarse voice. She shut the door behind her and went to the bedroom, where he was probably procrastinating and watching TV.
"I have something I need to tell you."

"I'll tell Kira," Hatori murmured back.
Tadao looked up from a book he'd been reading. It was a horror novel. "Mm? What is it?" He asked. "Have you found out what you're sick with?"

Shade nodded and crawled up next to him, so that she could lean her head against his shoulder.
"Yeah." She sucked in a deep breath. She didn't know how he would react to this news.
"Hatori says I have Small Cell Lung Cancer."

The book that Tadao was holding slipped out of his hands and hit the floor.
"W-what...?"
He couldn't have heard that right. No!

Shade sighed. "I have Small Cell Lung Cancer." She repeated. "I assume that you already know the survival rate..." She said softly. "Hatori is pretty sure that it's from second-hand smoke."

"But... what... no... You're... That can't have happened! It's not supposed to happen to you!" Tadao said.
Lee walked into the room unsteadily. "Wha's goin' on...?" He asked. He wasn't the best at talking yet, but he was understandable enough.
Tadao seemed to be shocked into silence now.

"Go upstairs, Lee, I'll talk to you after I'm done here." She told him softly. She looked back over at Tadao.

Lee nodded, biting his lip. Usually he was a little more energetic, but since something seemed to be wrong, he didn't think it was very appropriate to be cheerful. He turned around and walked back upstairs.
"Why did this happen to you?" Tadao asked. It was a rhetorical question.
