Nadia sat on the floor next to her twin sister, Aidan. They were wearing some old, kind of ratty clothes. Their father had gone on an all-day outing to the bar. He'd left money on the counter, a sign that said 'There'd better be food when I get back'.
Right now, Nadia was trying best as she could to count out the money, but when it came to some of the coins in the small pile of dollar bills, she kept ketting the nickels and quarters confused.
"Ai," She said, using her sister's nickname. "Do you remember which is which?"
She held up a nickel and a quarter.

Aidan stared at the quarter and nickel for a moment."This would really help if I could read better." She murmured before picking up a quarter and examining it. She thought she could make out the a on it."Nickel doesn't have an a in it right?" She asked looking at her sister.
Joel flopped down on the floor and proceeded to pick up the money and smell it."It smells funny." He said in slurred toddler language.

"I don't think it does... Okay. Then... the big one is the quarter... the smaller one is the nickel," Nadia decided. It sounded right. She glanced at her little brother and laughed.
"Smells like Dad," She said. "Don't say that to Dad, okay, Joel?" Last thing the twins wanted was for their little brother to be hurt.
She finished up counting the money.
"Um... I think it's nine dollars and sixty two cents..." She said, partially to herself, standing up.

"Okay... What can we get?" Aidan thought for a moment about this."Don't they have five dollar pizza deals or something?" She asked glancing at Joel then at her sister."Yeah. You don't want to repeat that." She commented to Joel.
Joel nodded when his sisters spoke."Okay." He said quietly.

"Yeah. Pizza..." Nadia agreed. "Uhh... what kinda pizza does Dad like, again?" She asked worriedly. She couldn't remember if it was pepperoni or canadian bacon...

"Er... Meat pizza?" That was all Aidan said."We should find the phone. So we can call the pizza in you know." Aidan said with a glance around.
"I look." Joel said before standing up and running off to look for the phone.

Nadia stood up. "We should help Joel look," She said with a laugh. She was more at peace when her father wasn't around... though she knew that when he came back he'd be drunk.

"Yeah." Aidan said before jumping up."We should get Joel to bed before dad gets home too." She commented. Perhaps Joel could avoid their drunk father this way."I figured you know why." Aidan added with a glance at her sister.

"Yeah... We'll have to order fast. Unless Dad ends up staying out all nigh..." Nadia said, following Joel. She noticed a bit of something under an untidy stack of papers. She moved the papers out of the way and found the phone. "Okay.... What's the pizza number?" She searched for a phone book now.

Aidan walked over to the fridge where a yellowed piece of paper was hung from a magnet. She grabbed it and handed it to Nadia."The pizza place number is there." She said pointing at the correct number. A little while back she had written a few different numbers for food places down and hung them on the fridge. So they wouldn't have to search the phone book."I think we have a coupon somewhere too..." She said trailing off as she went back to the kitchen to look for it.

"I hope. Then there'll be money left over. Maybe we could get a special dessert for Joel?" Nadia suggested as she slowly began dialing the number, checking to make sure that she didn't make any errors.

"Yeah he would like that." Aidan called from the kitchen. She opened some draws to see if there was a coupon in it. Nothing yet. She finally found the right one under a dirty plate. She walked back out to Nadia and held the coupon out for her sister."Found it." Aidan said. The coupon was one free dessert with the purchase of a pizza.
Joel walked back into the living room with his sisters while holding his hands out."I can't find it. I can't find it." He said repeating himself.
"That's alright. We got it." Aidan explained to the little boy.

Nadia smiled a thankful smile at her twin and then pressed the on button on the phone. It rang a couple times then someone answered. She asked how much the pizzas were. She'd order two pizzas, one pepperoni, one canadian. She didn't want her dad to be angry at them. So she told the person what she wanted, said she had a coupon for a free pizza, and then asked if they could add a dessert. In all, they'd spent eight dollars. Wow, good deal. She hung up the phone.
"Kay, it's ordered. It'll be here in less than a half hour," Nadia said to her sister.

"Good." Aidan looked around the cluttered house."Guess we could try picking up a bit..." She said trailing off. She had a good ideal about how to clean but it wasn't exactly a skill she knew well.

"Eh, Dad doesn't mind... but it would be nice if the house was clean I guess..." Nadia said. She didn't exactly want to clean this house. It was terribly dirty...
((Ooh, I know how Joel could die. Their dad gets home before the pizza gets there, he's drunk, he's mad that the food's not there, and takes it out on joel by kicking the kid so hard in the gut that he dies. It's possible. There was a girl who died of that in real life.))

Aidan shrugged and cleared a place on the couch for herself."We don't have to clean." She said before sitting down. Joel picked up a book and started flipping through it and looking at any pictures it happened to have. It looked like an encyclopedia. Probably from a mismatched set. They had a few different books and magazines that their father had brought home for no particular reason.

Nadia just sat down next to her sister and watched her brother flip through the book.
She heard the door open and slam shut and she froze. The pizza wasn't here yet. Oh no!
Kaito (I'm pretty sure that's what I named him XD) walked in. "Where's the food?!" He demanded.
"W-we just ordered it. It'll be here soon..." Nadia said quietly.
"You were supposed to have the food when I got home!" He roared.
Yup, he was drunk.
What happened next, Nadia didn't expect. Kaito whirled around and kicked Joel in the stomach... hard.
Nadia gasped, eyes wide.

Aidan was surprised but she jumped down beside her brother none the less. Was Joel okay? He didn't look okay.
Joel screamed when he was hit and he whimpered as Aidan got down beside him. All the little boy could really think was,'why do I hurt so much?'

((AH! The sadness...  )) Joel seemed to just go limp as the last bit of life left. Aidan reached out to hold her little brother hand. It already seemed to be getting cold. She could feel the tears falling down her face but she didn't bother to wipe them away. Joel was dead so what was keeping her and her sister here? Nothing. They would have to get out of here tonight unless they wanted the same fate as Joel and their mother. |
