Zoey had been jittery in that nervous sort of way where you were always looking around and laughing a little too much to hide distress all day. It had been the events of something that had happened the night before.
Here in Japan, she had an uncle that had lived here for a while. She'd met him the day they moved to Tokyo. She had spent a lot of time with him after that. He'd come to the house and hang out with her parents and spend time with her, acting all nice like he'd known her from the day she was born. It was nice to meet a relative of hers that she'd never met before.
The day before, her parents had told her she'd have to go to her uncle's house, because they'd both be busy and he could watch her. She thought it was kind of stupid that she couldn't stay home alone, but she did as her parents instructed and showed up at her uncle's house. He had been gone when she got there. There'd been a note on his nice marble countertop addressed to her, saying he was out with a friend and would be back later. So, while she'd been waiting, she'd hung out around the house, treating herself to some food that he had stated in the note that she could eat.
He showed up with one of his friends. She didn't know what was up. Her uncle was acting all weird. He was saying things that made her feel awkward, and he was flat-out acting strange. It wasn't long before she'd noticed the alcohol on his breath.
There'd been a lot of scary stuff after that that she couldn't bear to think about. All she allowed herself to recall from last night was that he'd hurt her, then... then... well, she couldn't think about it anymore after that. It scared her too much. And she'd gotten so many bruises from it...
Now, it was lunch time. She sat down at the table that she and Leo sat at most of the time and anxiously picked at the food in her bento. She knew she'd acted weird today. She'd kind of distanced herself from Leo, and hadn't even responded when those girls had picked on her. She'd just walked away. She couldn't even recall what they'd said. To be honest, she'd barely even noticed them. She wondered if Leo would bombard her with questions. She sighed and took a big bite of a rice ball that her mom had made, waiting for her friend to meet her at the table and sit down.
