Mary frowned at her father, but snuggled into his arms. She noticed the wince. She understood. She didn't get why Devon didn't think Akito loved him anymore, though.
"It's nice to meet you," she said in a polite tone.
Kairi hadn't noticed Devon's momentary discomfort. She smiled at Mary. "You're so polite," she said, taking one of Mary's tiny hands and shaking it slightly. "Nice to meet you too."

Devon grinned. Mary might look two or three, but the girl had a mind that was much older. He grinned down at Mary. "So what did you do today?" He asked his daughter.

"Played with Chiasa," Mary said. "We went into the kitchen and stole some treats." She licked her lips. "But Suzume came in, so we ran away." She dug into her pockets to show him some of the treats she'd escaped with. "It was Chiasa-chan's idea." She stuffed some rice candies in her mouth. After she'd swallowed, she offered a little chocolate bar to Kairi. "Want it?"
Kairi chuckled. "Sure," she said, taking the chocolate and pulling off the wrapper.

Devon grinned. "Yeah, watch out for her. But you shouldn't really be stealing candy." He chided her.

"Fine," Mary huffed. She squirmed out of her father's arms and landed gracefully on the ground. "B'bye! I'm goin' now!" She called before trotting away.
"She's interesting," Kairi commented. "And adorable," she added, showing a grin.

Devon nodded. "Yeah. She acts like her mom." He said a bit sadly. He still missed Akito...

Kairi just nodded, unsure of what to say. She stood with him in a slightly uncomfortable silence. It stayed like that for a few minutes, until a light chuckle broke the silence. Why did it send shivers down her spine when she heard it? It just didn't sound... kind. A woman with long black hair approached them.
"Why, hello," Ren said, smiling in a too-pleasant way. Kairi noticed the woman's hair looked like an oil slick. "Devon, who is this?"

Devon glared darkly at Ren but said, "She's a friend of mine." And that was all he said to the oily woman.

"A 'friend,' hmm?" Ren asked, a smirk playing on her face.
Kairi frowned. Who was this, anyway?
"A 'friend'. Ha. Yeah right. You really are quite fickle, Devon," she said. "Already with another woman, so soon after Akito's left. Of course, I can't blame you. She was a terrible daughter. Probably a horrid wife as well."
So this was the mother of Devon's ex-wife? Wooow, she was a b**ch!

"Ren, stop twisting this around. She is only my friend." Devon hissed at her. "And Akito was a wonderful mother. You were the terrible one."

Ren smirked. "Oh yes, a 'wonderful mother' would certainly leave her husband and daughter." She laughed without humor.
"Hey!" Kairi snapped. "You should really quit talking to him like that. And quit talking about his wife like that! You don't know why she left!"
"And you do?"
"Well, no," Kairi replied. "But I'm sure she had a good reason," she said to Ren.
"How can you say that? You didn't even meet her," Ren said. "She really was horrid. She was even worse at being a son."
"You shouldn't talk about your own dau-- wait, what the he**? Son?"

Devon shot Kairi a look that said 'I'll exlplain later'. Thanks for making me sound gay, Ren. He thought sarcasticly. "Akito is female. It's no surprise she wasn't a good son." He snapped at the woman.

Kairi was clenching her fists. It looked like the skin on her knuckles would rip at any second. People like this woman, she hated them. Jeeze, she was talking about her own daughter like she was lower than dirt!
"You b*tch!" She snapped at Ren. "Quit talking about your daughter like that. I mean, serriously! What's you'r f***ing problem?!"
Ren only smiled coldly, and Kairi shuddered a little again. "I can see why you chose her, Devon. She's just like Akito."

Devon growled. "Ren, just leave. Just... leave." Devon sighed and rested his head in his hands as if he had a headache.

Ren laughed harshly. "Gladly." She whirled around, strutting off.
"Okay, what the he** is her problem?" Kairi demanded, sounding absolutely disgusted with Ren.

"She's a crasy bi**h." Devon explained simply with a sigh. "You should just forget about everything she said." He advised her.

Kairi nodded. "I feel kinda nosy for asking this, but would you mind explaining the whole... 'Akito being a son' thing...?" She asked.

"While Akito was growing up, Ren forced her to hide her gender from the rest of the family and pretend to be male." Devon told Kairi. "It was cruel."

Kairi looked shocked. "Wow. That's not something you hear about every day." Raising a girl to be a boy. How twisted was that?! "It'd suck to have her as a mother. I feel very fortunate..."
Her father had died recently. But her mother was perfectly kind, and her father had been nice as well. She had a great life.

Devon nodded. "Akito's life was tough." He said. "I know alot of people with bad childhoods."
